Celebrate Valentine’s Weekend with Toledo Opera: The Elixir of Love
Share
If you’ve been craving a little romance, humor, and heart this Valentine’s weekend, I have some exciting news: Toledo Opera is bringing back Gaetano Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love—for the first time since 1985! Mark your calendars for Friday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 15 at 2 p.m. at the Valentine Theatre in Toledo, Ohio.
This sparkling romantic comedy is the perfect way to celebrate love in all its forms. Overflowing with warmth, humor, and some of the most memorable music in opera, The Elixir of Love tells the charming story of Nemorino, a shy and earnest young man hopelessly in love with the beautiful and independent Adina. When Nemorino turns to the flamboyant traveling salesman Dr. Dulcamara for a “love potion,” chaos, comedy, and a whirlwind of unexpected events follow. And yes—you’ll absolutely fall in love with Nemorino’s iconic aria “Una furtiva lagrima.”
This production is stacked with incredible talent. Conductor J. Ernest Green returns for his fourth season, while award-winning stage director Ian Silverman makes his Toledo Opera debut. Tenor David Walton takes on the role of Nemorino, soprano Marnie Breckenridge stars as Adina, and Jason Budd—back for his fifth season—brings his signature charm to Dr. Dulcamara. The principal cast is rounded out by baritone Robbie Raso as Belcore and Toledo Opera Resident Artist Sarah Rachel Bacani as Gianetta, making for a mix of national and international talent that promises to wow audiences.
Want a little insider scoop before the performance? Toledo Opera is hosting a free Pre-Opera Talk one hour before each show in the Grand Lobby. Dr. Ryan Ebright, Associate Professor of Musicology at Bowling Green State University, will provide fascinating historical context, answer questions, and give you all the tools to fully enjoy Donizetti’s masterpiece.
General Director James M. Norman perfectly sums up why this opera is so special: “The Elixir of Love is a joyful reminder of why opera matters – its humor, heart, and humanity bring people together.” And Artistic Director Kevin Bylsma adds, “Our singers bring unmatched skill, charm, and passion to every note, making this a truly unforgettable operatic experience.”
